Pressured to Get Married?

Cup of Jo-Joanna's Smitten blog recently touched on an interesting topic, involving marriage and whether or not your parents pressure you to get married.

So, do your parents pressure you to get married? Do you ever hear the, "When am I going to have grand-kids?" speech or "Has be propsed yet?"

My mom is under the 'live out your twenties until you get married/you have the rest of your life to be married' mindset. She's told me numerous times to wait until marriage. As for my dad, I am pretty sure that he would have a heart-attack if I got married anytime soon. So in short, no, my parents don't pressure me to get married. Thank God. But, what about you? And if you're already hitched, did your parents pressure or pester you?

LOL! My mother pressured me not to get married! I think she's still a little uncomfortable with it even now that I am married.

Ha! Both my parents married soon after college and both those marriages ended in divorce. So, uh, I've got the opposite of that pressure (although I do get the occasional "If you never put yourself out there, you're never going to meet guy," which is as close as my mom ever gets).

Ok, so pretty obvious......NO! My mom's main concern right now is "when are you gonna get a boyfriend?" haha.....and my dad would have a heart attack too if I ever got married anytime soon for the single reason that he'd have to chip in for the wedding. Haha. Love it. Love you :)

Hopefully people are getting married because they want to, not because their parents (or anyone else) are pressuring them to! It would seem odd for parents to pressure their kids to get married. What would be their motivation? Same with the grand kids thing. It would be tough to have a kid when you're just not quite ready...

I don't personally think that most rational people would get married because their parents want them to, but I know a lot of people who have their parents (ahem, mothers) who are that little voice in their heads. "When are you going to settle down? So, do you have a boyfriend yet? Have you found a nice boy yet?" etc etc. I think their motivation is probably that they want their daughters to be taken care of. I think there's some stigma to being alone, particularly for our parent's generation. Very unfair, in my opinion!

Also, I think there are a lot of other people who may feel a bit of a push to get married because all their friends are going down that path. Maybe pressure isn't the right word, but a 'push.' Ya know,
"all my friends are settling down. Maybe it's the right time for me too?"
